Why it works

The breathing routine described above can last for as much or as little time as you want. It’s a useful way to get back in touch with yourself if you’re feeling overwhelmed or are finding it hard to listen to what your body is telling you. It’s also useful during periods when we might find it hard to connect to certain emotions. During those times, we often have a physical reaction, as well as the emotional response. Slowing our breathing, ensuring we’re getting enough oxygen, and reducing the physical response to these feelings can help the feelings to become more manageable.

As I mentioned above, this process isn’t the same as repressing these feelings (that isn’t helpful). Instead, it’s about learning to self-soothe. When we’re in a situation of panic, feeling very exposed, or feeling overwhelmed, we are not in a place where we can make good decisions for ourselves. When we quiet the physical response to these feelings, we calm the emotions themselves, which helps us take steps to get our needs met in a healthy way (and reduces the chance that we’ll take unhealthy steps to do so).
